GIRRAWEEN NATIONAL PARK

Girraween National Park sits on the Queensland and New South Wales border between Stanthorpe and Tenterfield.  There are well-marked signs leading off the New England Highway.

A brochure printed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service describes the park as ‘Massive granite outcrops, precariously balanced boulders, clear streams and tumbling cascades dissect 11,800 hectares of eucalyptus forest, sedgelands and heathlands. These significant communities provide for a mixture of plant and animal species usually found north, south, east and west of here and some that do not occur naturally elsewhere.’

The park boasts two separate camping areas, both totally different. Bald Rock Creek camping area sits amongst boulders and woodland where Castle Rock camping area is more open grassed.  Both camp areas have sites specifically set aside for caravans and/or camper trailers

Amenities are good and there are hot showers, toilets, picnic tables, barbecues and drinking water.  There are no powered sites and generators are not permitted.  Wood is not provided and campers who intend to use the barbecues need to bring wood with them.  There are no rubbish bins and rubbish has to be taken with you when you leave

There are ten different walks of varying lengths that will take you between twenty-five minutes to eight hours return.  Wildlife is abundant in all areas of the park and it is not unusual for kangaroos to wander amongst the tents
