CAMP OVEN COOKING IN AUSTRALIA (COCIA®)

KYWONG RAIL SIDING

The Riverina district was once one of the States richest grain areas.  To cope with this railways were put through the district and grain silos and grain holding sheds were built in all outlying districts.  Sadly these silos have fallen into disrepair and have been abandoned.  Most are no longer used.  One magnificent specimen of the past can be found along the Sturt Highway between Wagga Wagga and Narrandera at Kywong Siding.  How long has this one been abandoned.  The photos below show the sad story

The four high silo towers stand majestic against the sky

The grain shed is still complete

The Kywong sign leans atop the crumbling rail platform

Rail tracks run in and away.  How many thousands of tons of grain would have gone along here

The tracks are sadly becoming more and more overgrown and the whole area neglected

Note the wide rail guage on these three main lines

This is the main line.  You be the judge as to how long it has been since a train ran along these rails
